Physician Burnout Rates Spike to 63%

17 July 2023

The most recent study in the national burnout survey series co-authored by the AMA shows how the COVID-19 pandemic magnified long-standing issues that have accelerated the U.S. physician burnout rate. At the end of 2021, nearly 63% of physicians reported symptoms of burnout, up from 38% in 2020. Research shows that large-scale change is needed to address the physician burnout crisis. As the healthcare industry continues to evolve and embrace technological advancements, the implementation and utilization of Electronic Health Record (EHR) technology have become integral to modern medical practices.

It is essential to acknowledge and understand the concerns and challenges faced by physicians in adopting and utilizing EHR systems.

Usability and User Interface: Physicians often cite challenges with EHR system usability and user interface design as a major source of frustration. Complex and non-intuitive interfaces can impede efficient workflow, leading to increased time spent navigating the system rather than interacting with patients.

Time Consumption: Learning to use and navigate an EHR system effectively takes time, and the initial learning curve can be steep. Physicians often feel that the time required to become proficient with EHRs could be better utilized for patient care or professional development.

Data Entry and Documentation Burden: Physicians face an increased administrative burden due to the need to input a significant amount of patient information into the EHR. The time spent on data entry can reduce the time available for direct patient care, which is a concern for many healthcare professionals.

Interference with Patient Interaction: Physicians worry that the use of EHR technology during patient visits can disrupt the natural flow of the doctor-patient relationship. Focusing on data entry during the consultation may hinder meaningful interactions and reduce the quality of care provided.
