HOSPITAL EHR SYSTEMS WERE NOT DESIGNED FOR AMBULATORY MEDICAL OR SURGICAL PRACTICES

6 July 2022

The fact is simply that Hospital EHR system were designed to manage the hospital environment but were ‘NEVER” designed to manage a physicians practice.

In today’s competitive healthcare market, many hospitals have put policy in place to recruit and or purchase a variety of specialty practices. This enables the hospital to control the referral patterns of physicians in the hospitals geographic location. By acquiring these practices, physicians are expected to refer to other physicians that are owned by the hospital. These physicians are also strongly encouraged to refer cases to the hospital owned surgical centers, imaging centers, laboratory centers or other centers owned and or operated by the hospital.

Ask any physician that has been forced to use a hospital EHR system in their medical or surgical practice just how happy there with the hospital EHR system? The most common tirade of complaints includes the following:

  • The Hospital EHR Software does not work for my specialty
  • The Hospital EHR Software is cumbersome to use in my clinic
  • The Hospital EHR Software has reduced the number of patients I can see in clinic each day
  • The Hospital EHR Software requires me to type a large amount of my clinic notes
  • The Hospital EHR Software is not easy to customize
  • The Hospital EHR Software has required our practice to add staff to due to the inefficiency
  • The Hospital EHR Software has reduced my practice revenue due to a decrease in number of patients we are able to see in clinic each day

There is a huge difference between software designed for a hospital and software designed for a medical or surgical practice. With Ambulatory practices, controlling the efficiency of the clinic workflow is critical as it determines the revenue of the practice. By implementing EHR technology specifically designed for medical and surgical practices, Physicians, PAs, NPs, PTs, etc. can see more patients in the same amount of time compared to using a Hospital Based EHR Software. Rather than forcing physicians to utilize the hospital software in their medical and surgical practices, hospitals should encourage physicians to select the EHR technology that will create the best ROI in terms of efficiency and productivity for the practice. With government mandates in place for interoperability, EHR data such as progress notes, scanned documents, health data, CPT Codes, IDC-10 Codes can be easily updated to the hospital EHR system each time data is entered into the medical or surgical practices EHR Software.

MD Logic offers a variety of HL7 interfaces to exchange data between a hospital and the MD Logic Suite of Software. The first step is to schedule a meeting with the hospital to determine what data will be exchanged and the integration specifications. Based upon those requirements a time will be scheduled to beta test sending and receiving data. Once the data integration is confirmed by both the hospital and MD Logic, the interface would Go-Live.
