Choosing a Productive EHR

9 July 2012

When a physician looks to invest in an EHR (electronic health record) there are several critical elements that come to mind that will make or break the clinic. Thomas J. Bierster, Jr., Chief Executive Officer for MD Logic, stated “knowing what to look for in an EHR will save doctors hundreds of hours in lost productivity and thousands of dollars in lost production. Doctors did not go to school to become experts in technology and workflow management. Unfortunately the EHR market is littered with software companies that have no idea of what it takes to maximize efficiency and control the workflow of a medical clinic.

"Many doctors end up frustrated after sitting in on multiple demonstrations with the feeling that all EHR software is built the same. This could not be further from the truth. When it comes to selecting and implementing a successful EHR the following items are critical to success:

1. Speed of Input - The doctor must choose a system that provides “SPEED” when documenting patient care. This is critical as the doctors and medical staff will spend a great deal of time using the software to retrieve previous data in addition to documenting care of each visit. The doctor must be able to “see themselves” using the software to document care “real time” in clinic. If the doctors cannot see the software being used “real time” in the exam room then the system will “fail”.
2. Ease of Use - The doctor must choose a software that is simple to use, easy to learn and provides quick navigation throughout the electronic health records. If during the software demonstration the doctor feels lost then chances are that the software will not save time in the busy clinic. It is true that all tasks become faster with repetition but navigating the EHR software should be very straight forward and easy to use.
3. Implementation and Support - How long should it take for a clinic to go live from the very first day of training? How long has the EHR Company been in business? Do they work with doctors in my specialty? How stable is the software? If I need support how quickly will it be provided? These are just a few questions to consider with investing in an EHR company."

Mr. Bierster also stated “there have been many companies that have jumped into the EHR market over the last 2 years. These companies are hoping to cash in on the US government spending billions of dollars in their attempt to automate the healthcare industry. Unfortunately most EHR systems are not designed to save time but simply to capture data. The key to building great software is engineering software that will save time, increase efficiency and improve profitability.

“The MD Logic software is designed for “speed”. No other EHR can compete when it comes to offering speed “real time” in a busy clinic. Our software is specifically designed for touch screen technology (no mouse required) and takes full advantage of the Apple iPad along with all the other “true” touch screen technology available in the market. Speed is critical when using an EHR in clinic each day. When it comes to “ease of use” we own the market. During the initial software demonstration we have the doctor and staff “touch” the screen and complete their own software demonstration. Our sales team simply helps guide the doctors and staff as they navigate the MD Logic software during the MD Logic EHR software demonstration.

“Since MD Logic offers the fastest EHR in the industry and knowing that we engineer our software to be the easiest to use it makes it all possible to take a doctor live with MD Logic in 5 days. Our corporate trainers are experts in transitioning clinics from paper charts and from other EHR systems. Within 5 days we are able to automate the total workflow of a clinic and go live with MD Logic. This type of success in unmatched in the healthcare industry. This is why doctors must choose “wisely” when choosing an EHR for their clinic. Choosing a non- productive EHR will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost time and revenue for the clinic.”
