Bad EHRs the Reason for Many Practice Break Ups

14 September 2014

Whether your specialty is Primary Care, ENT, Orthopaedic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, General Surgery, Cardiology or any other sub-specialty, physicians have a limited amount of time each day to see their patients.  With the huge increase in the adoption of EHR technology over the past 5 years, many physicians are finding themselves trapped with a bad EHR that has reduced the number of patients they can see during clinic each day.

Unlike every other business in the country, physicians are the only business that has seen huge reductions in their fees. To counter these reductions, physicians must see more patients in the same amount of time. Unfortunately for most physicians, the market is littered with bad EHR’s that slow physicians down and kill productivity. These physicians end up spending more time entering data into their EHR system then time spent with actual patients. In most cases, the doctor was not involved with the purchase of the EHR. A committee of doctors or the practice administrator did the research and the decision was made to buy a particular EHR with the attitude that all EHR systems are basically the same. This could not be further from the truth.

It does not take long for a doctor to become frustrated after working with a bad EHR system. As the number of patients seen each day in clinic decreases and the time spent entering data in the EHR increases the doctor reaches a crossroad. With a decrease in patients come a decrease in annual collections and the net take home pay for these physicians. Once the cash flow goes down you have the doctor’s attention and that is when the questions begin to fly about EHR technology.

  • “Who purchased this EHR?”
  • “How can we get rid of this EHR?”
  • “I want to go back to paper charts as I was more productive with paper charting?”

These statements follow each bad EHR installation. For many physicians continuing to use a non-productive EHR, this is the breaking point.

Tim McKenna, Vice President of Sales for MD Logic, stated “I speak to more and more physicians each day that are breaking up and leaving a clinic or hospital environment due to non-productive EHR. These physicians grew frustrated with these bad EHR systems and the reduction in productivity. The EHR technology resulted in fewer patients seen in clinic each day and significantly impacted their annual earnings. With the vast majority of physicians paid on performance, reduced number of clinic visits equals a reduction in pay to the physician. I have talked to many physicians that said there annual salary was cut by 40% due to a non-productive EHR. The clinic or hospital would not change or consider other solutions so they felt they had no other options but to leave. The economics was one reason but the drudgery of using a non-productive EHR was the nail in the coffin. These physicians were going in early to catch up from the previous day and staying late to catch up for the current day in clinic. While all the staff, administrators and management team were going home, these physicians were stuck at the clinic dealing with a non-productive EHR.”

“When I meet with one of these physicians I explain that our EHR software is unique. We talk about being efficient and what they didn’t like about their bad EHR. Once a physician sees MD Logic for the first time they are blown away. They are amazed at the simplicity, speed and flexibility of the MD Logic EHR software. For the last part of the demonstration I pull out my iPhone and show them our MD Logic smart phone apps. These physicians get to see “real time” how they are able to take their EHR everywhere they go using our smart phone apps. Being on call is no longer an issue nor is going to the hospital to see a patient. With the MD Logic EHR they improve their quality of life and become extremely efficient. After spending 10 plus years in medical school, these physicians simply want to practice medicine and done want to deal with aggravation of using a non-productive EHR.”
